The school opened in 1957 as a boys only secondary school with 115 form one pupils and 25 commercial students.
The commercial students transferred to Luveve in 1960. The 6th form was introduced in 1960 with 21 students. Girls were introduced in form one up to Form Four in 1982. Four girls were in 1985 introduced into Lower six. Academically since inception in 1957 the school became only the second high school after Goromonzi in the then Southern Rhodesia to offer Sixth Form education to black pupils in the country. Since then, Fletcher High School’s O and A Level results have never been below 50%. The school enrollment now stands at 907 with 607 boys, 300 girls and 332 boarders, 575 day scholars. The highest ever recorded school enrollment was 1230 recorded in 1983.

OUR HEADMASTER

Stephen Njini was born on 17 February 1963 and attended Samambwa Primary School in Zhombe from 1970-1976. He did his secondary education at Drake Secondary School from 1977 to 1980. He then trained as a secondary science teacher in Physics and Chemistry at Gweru Teachers College from 1982 to 1985. Mr Njini holds a Bachelor of Education degree and Masters in Chemistry from University of Zimbabwe. He went on to do a Bachelor and Master of commerce degree in Accounting with Midlands State University. He has vast experience in teaching and student management, with more than 20 years experience in the education field.
